"Strong blues-based fingerpicking, heartfelt singing and clever, insightful original lyrics combine to make this CD a fine first effort from Marjorie Thompson."

"Tunes are good. Guitar is good. The most pleasant surprise was your communicative, inflected, unaffected voice. I luv yer songs, man."

- Steve James, Austin, TX

"I got the new CD and it looks and sounds great!"

- Pat Donohue, Minneapolis, MN

"I listened to the songs given and they are great! I am so happy that they aren't some remake of an old style, rather, they are rather unpredictable! Nice job!"

Lyrics

Back Home

Well he lived in the country
Lived on a farm
Land rolled free
like an outstretched arm
His house stood alone
His castle to find
This is what brought him peace of mind
At the end of the day
He could find his way
Back home.

Oh he worked in the city
Worked in town
Circumstances that brought him down
But he did what’s expected
Did what he should
Awaiting the end of the day
when he could
Finally, find his way
Back home

Oh sometimes he’d travel
Pack up and fly
Said he enjoyed it
Wasn’t a lie
But wherever he wandered
Wherever he’d roam
He sure would be thinkin
bout comin home.
Finally, find his way ... back home

Chorus:
Back home
Brings a smile
Widens with each country mile
Breathe the land
Touch the air
Taste the music
being there…back home.

So whenever you ponder
Consider the cost
The price paid for living
The money once lost
Consider the value
Consider what’s real
What you really can’t work for
Can’t even steal
It’s the peace on your mind
When you finally find
Your way ... back home
Empty Pillbox Blues

When I went out on the road
I did not forget to bring
stuff for all kinds of weather
I packed most everything
Three kinds of shoes
T-shirts and briefs
Long pants and short ones
raincoat and fleece.

So imagine my surprise
When I looked inside that box
I forgot to pack the Valium
But remembered all the socks.
My heart began to race
My head began to pound
My mind began to wonder
If I was tension bound.

Chorus:
Well, I’m runnin out of drugs
Supplies are gettin mighty low
My body’s gonna ache
from my head down to my toe
I got the antacid, analgesic,
antibacterial, antioxidant blues.

At one time there was Zantac
in three different hues
when I ran out of Valium
I really got the blues.
I used up the lorezapam
The vitamins and cream.
My pillbox barely rattles
My stash is just a dream.

Well, this story has an ending
This story has a theme
I got through my vacation
But nearly lost my steam.
The next time I’ll be sure to pack
This side of overkill
I’ll never fear of running out
Of any kind of pill.
Thousand Times Again

I always try so hard to please you
Its always you I’m thinking of
To make you smile
To make you sigh
To keep your expectations high
I do it once
do it twice

A thousand times again.
I don’t mind it when you tease me
I’m just glad to see you try
You make me laugh
you make me cry
I never have to wonder why
You do it once
You do it twice
A thousand times again.

Every hour we spend together
I sit and watch the things you do.
Absorb the time, a whole life’s share
Love’s frustration hard to bear.
We do it once
We do it twice
A thousand times again.

Two lives as one
Lived within our hearts
And played out, as a hymn
that weaves the fabric
of this strange fate
And fills us to the brim.
A thousand times
A thousand times
A thousand times again.
Riding

She arrived at that station at 12:45
A ticket in her hand
She was carrying a heavy burden
A heavy load she could not understand

But she carried that big old suitcase
She could not leave it behind
She took it wherever she traveled
And it weighed on her mind.

Chorus:
Riding, runnin scared
Riding, hear that moan
Riding down the road of confusion
Where the answer’s never known.

Oh that bus pulled out of that depot
Oh it pulled out right on time
She stared out the window
She stared at the road
And wondered bout the difference
between a sin and a crime.

Chorus

Well that bus reached its destination
but her journey had no end
The answer to her question
was like dust upon the sill
That flies away with every curve
Every turn around the bend.

Chorus

Day Will Rise
(Rev Gary Davis)

Things looked normal,
things seemed fine
The sun was shining bright
I said hello, you greeted me
And then the day turned into night.

The night it fell so swiftly
The dust, it turned to cloud
The people disappeared
The day became a shroud

Chorus 1:
We’re standing, we are one
The smoke is lifting from the sun
Eyes are open, hearts still know
Day will rise, winds will blow.

How long can last a minute
a second or a year
what measure and whose power
What force it takes to bear

The day returned, the day awoke
The sun still shone its name
We looked, and felt and saw
And nothing was the same.

Chorus 2:
We’re standing, we are one
Eyes are open, here’s the sun
Day is lifting its disguise
Dreams alive, and day will rise.
Hesitation Blues

Well, nickel is a nickel, I said, dime is a dime
I need a new gal, she won't mind
Tell me how long do I have to wait?
Can I get you now, or, must I hesitate?

The eagle on the dollar says "in God we trust"
You say you want a man
You wanna see that dollar first
Tell me how long do I have to wait?
Can I get you now, I said, must I hesitate?

Well, If the river was whiskey, and, I was a duck
You know I'd swim to the bottom
Lord, and never come up
Tell me how long do I have to wait?
Can I get you now, I said, must I hesitate?

Well, rocks in the ocean, said, fish in the sea
Knows you mean the world to me
Tell me how long do I have to wait?
Can I get you now, Lord, must I hesitate?

I got them Hesitation socks and them hesitation shoes
You know, Lord, I got them hesitation blues
Tell me how long do I have to wait?
Can I get you now, Lord, must I hesitate?
Said, can I get you now, how long must I hesitate?
Mystery Man

Well here’s the paper, here’s your chair
And the slippers, that you don’t wear
You don’t drink, but here’s the beer
Its so hard to read you
When you just stare

Chorus:
But that’s OK
Things seem fine
Maybe not
But there’s no sign
You’re just the mystery man
Thinking thoughts I can’t divine
But I’m still glad you’re probably mine

Well, here’s your dinner, here’s a treat
Vegetables that you won’t eat
Here’s some juice, but its not too sweet
Guess you’re just stuck
With that rice and meat
Well you say I’m the reason,
why you feel
so weak
But I can’t hear you,
you forgot to speak
Don’t wanna hide, if you won’t seek
And by the way,
things really ain’t so bleak.

So baby, darlin, honey, dear
Could you just listen,
just pretend to hear
I’ll even whisper if you come so near
I just can’t stand it
when you’re not here.
There and Gone

Frost on the windshield
Sun still down
Started the engine
pulled out of town.
Got on the highway
dark all around
Headin to the city
leavin tracks on the ground

Chorus:
Oh, you were there and gone
like a shootin star
that drops to earth
after flying so far
it seemed like a long time
Or maybe like never
Lighting me up
in a flash, and forever.

The street lights were shining
like sparks in the haze
Coming attractions
of future days.
days that grow long
When I’m sitting alone
Hoping you’ll write
or call on the phone

Chorus

The frost finally melted
the red sun came out
Clouds they did scatter
But the sky left no doubt
that blue was the color
the key to the song
Blue in my heart
and its been there so long.

Chorus
Now and Then

Lay with me
In this big bed
The sheets are crisp and new
Pull up the covers
Hold me close
Its only me and you

Chorus:
Always
Find ways
Be here when
Forever yours
But only now and then.
Talk to me
But stay so near
Wrap your arms around
Turn that TV down real low
So it doesn’t make a sound

Play with me
We always laugh
Breathe the moment’s ember
Discuss some books or politics
Or things we can’t remember.
Stay on me
Make us last
Keep the day so right
Smile and whisper softly still
And keep us through the night.
It Seems Real

Sitting in the window
of an opulent hotel
Looking out on seventh avenue
Listening to the music
that the blind pianist plays
Watching waves of people
passing through.

It seems real
Its seems fine
When we’re here
I think you can be mine

Walking in a cold wind
on a northern winter night
Holding you against the icy wind
Wishin we were warmer,
but happy just the same
Knowing that this moment
could have been.

It seems real
Its seems fine
When we’re here
I feel you can be mine

Waiting at the restaurant
on forty second street
Wond’rin if the waitress sees our face
Drinking cups of coffee
and it seems so usual
Being close to you inside this place.

It seems real
Its seems fine
When we’re here
Its like you are mine
Riding in a taxi on a Sunday afternoon
Running for a train that’s finally here
Leaning on your arm just seems
the natural thing to do
Feeling all this time
that you’ve been near.

It seems real
Its seems fine
When we’re here
I know you are mine.
Codine
(Buffy Sainte Marie)

An' my belly is cravin', I got a shakin' in my head
I feel like I'm dyin', I wish I was dead
If I lived till tomorrow it'll be a long time
And I'll reel and I'll fall and I'll die on codine
And it's real, it's real, one more time

Well when I was a young girl I learned not to care
Wild whiskey, confronted I often did swear
Well my mother and father said whiskey is a curse
But the fate of their baby, was a million times worse
And it's real, it's real, one more time

Stay away from the cities, stay away from the towns
Stay away from the men pushin' the codine around
Stay away from the stores where the remedy is found
Or you'll live off your days as a slave to codine
And it's real, yes it's real, one more time

You'll forget your woman, you'll forget about man
Try it just once, an' you'll try it again
You'll forget about life, you'll forget about time
And you'll live off your days as a slave to codine
And it's real, it's real, one more time

An' my belly is cravin', I got a shakin' in my head
I feel like I'm dyin', I wish I was dead
If I lived till tomorrow it'll be a long time
And I'll reel, I'll fall, and I'll die on codine
And it's real, it's real, one more time
And it's real, it's real, one more time
Driving to Distraction

Well you say
I drive you crazy
You say that I’m obsessed
But when you sit beside me
I try to do my best

Well I spark that ignition
Turn that key
Rev up the engine most gracefully
But its never to your satisfaction
I’m drivin you..oo..oo
I’m drivin you..oo..oo
I’m drivin you..oo..oo..to distraction.

But baby
I see the fear
The scared look in your eye
I see from those white knuckles
You were really petrified
I’m drivin you..oo..oo
I’m drivin you..oo..oo
I’m drivin you..oo..oo..to distraction.

Well honey
You might suffer
From some unearthly visions
Maybe generated by that little
Rear end collision?
I’m drivin you..oo..oo
I’m drivin you..oo..oo
I’m drivin you..oo..oo…..to distraction.

Well darlin
Can’t you see
I’m trying to navigate
You say speed up, I don’t know why
Just all them cars go whizzing by.
Well Stop on the stop, go on the green
What’s that yellow really mean?
Oh its never to your satisfaction
I’m drivin you..oo..oo
I’m drivin you..oo..oo to distraction.

So you say
Obey the rules
About staying in that lane
Don’t do this, baby, don’t do that
Its driving me insane.
Oh baby, Oh, Ba-a-by
I’m drivin you..oo..oo..to distraction.
